Sen. Marco Rubio Responds to Villaraigosa Comments, Talks ...

By Nicole Rojas | First Posted: Aug 29, 2012 11:24 AM EDT

(Photo : Reuters) Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) speaks at the Latino Coalition Annual Economic Summit at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington May 23, 2012.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) appeared on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday to address comments made by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat, on Tuesday.

According to ABC News, Villaraigosa, chair of the Democratic National Convention, told reporters, "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate."

Like Us on Facebook

The comment referred to the Republican National Convention's plan to give prominent airtime to several Hispanic Republicans.

Rubio said he agreed with Villaraigosa but added that the issue was not solely a Republican one. "I think what he's saying, quite frankly, is true for both parties," Rubio said. "Policies matter and, look, the Republican Part does have a challenge. We can't just be the anti-illegal immigration party, we have to be the pro-legal immigration party."

Recent polls show Romney is failing to gain Hispanic support. According to ABC News, an Aug. 6-26 Gallup poll placed Obama in the lead among registered Hispanic voters with 61 percent over Romney's 29 percent.

Romney, who along with Obama will count on Hispanic votes in key swing states, has been seen by many as largely anti-immigrants. His opposition to Obama's Deferred Action plan for illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. fortifies this belief.

Rubio touched upon immigration on Wednesday and said, "We have a broken system of immigration that needs to be fixed and we have a legal immigration problem because we have millions of people who are in this country without documents and we have to deal with that in a way that honors our legacy both as a nation of compassion and a nation of immigrants but also as a nation of laws."

Rubio also said that he believed Romney would replace the Deferred Action plan if elected. "That's what I think you can expect from the Romney presidency and I think the obligation of some of us in the Congress is to find that permanent solution," Rubio said on the morning show. "It was something I was working on, that I continue to work on, an alternative to the DREAM Act that allows us to continue to deal with that issue but not in a way that's amnesty and not in a way that encourages illegal immigration in the future."

Rubio is just one of many Latino speakers planned for the Republican Convention. He is joined by New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Rep. Francisco Canseco of Texas, Texas Senate nominee Ted Cruz and Delaware candidate for lieutenant governor Sher Valenzuela.?

New nanomaterial could help keep pilots and sensitive equipment safe from destructive lasers

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A University of Central Florida assistant professor has developed a new material using nanotechnology, which could help keep pilots and sensitive equipment safe from destructive lasers.

UCF Assistant Professor Jayan Thomas, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University Associate Professor Rongchao Jin chronicle their work in the July issue of the journal Nano Letters.

Thomas is working with gold nanoparticles and studying their properties when they are shrunk into a small size regime called nanoclusters. Nanoparticles are already microscopic in size, and a nanometer is about 1/80000 of the thickness of a single strand of human hair. Nanoclusters are on the small end and nanocrystals are on the larger end of the nanoregime. Nano clusters are so small that the laws of physics that govern the world people touch and smell aren't often observed.

"Nanoclusters occupy the intriguing quantum size regime between atoms and nanocrystals, and the synthesis of ultra-small, atomically precise metal nanoclusters is a challenging task," Thomas said.

Thomas and his team found that nanoclusters developed by adding atoms in a sequential manner could provide interesting optical properties. It turns out that the gold nanoclusters exhibit qualities that may make them suitable for creating surfaces that would diffuse laser beams of high energy. They appear to be much more effective than its big sister, gold nanocrystal which is the (nano)material used by artists to make medieval church window paintings.

So why does it matter?

Think of commercial pilots or fighter pilots. They use sunglasses or helmet shields to protect their eyes from the sun's light. If the glasses or helmet shield could be coated with nanoclusters tested in Thomas' lab at UCF, the shield could potentially diffuse high-energy beams of light, such as laser. Highly sensitive instruments needed for navigation and other applications could also be protected in case of an enemy attack using high energy laser beams.

"These results give me great pleasure since the technique we used to study the optical properties of these atomically precise particle is one invented by UCF Professors Eric VanStryland and David Hagan many years ago," Thomas said. "But the progression we've made is very exciting."

Because nanoclusters appear to have a better ability to diffuse high beams of energy, they are a promising area for future development. There is still plenty of applications to be explored using these very interesting atomically engineered materials. Until now, much research has been focused on the larger nanocrystal.

Thomas is also exploring the use of these particles in the polymer material used for 3D telepresence to make it more sensitive to light. If successful, it can take the current polymers a step closer to developing real time 3D telepresence.

3D-Telepresence provides a holographic illusion to a viewer who is present in another location by giving that person a 360-degree view (in 3D) of everything that's going on. It's a step beyond 3-D and is expected to revolutionize the way people see television and in how they participate in activities around the world. For example, by allowing a viewer to "walk around" a remote location as if in a virtual game, a surgeon could help execute a complicated medical procedure from thousands of miles away.

Others who contributed to the new material include: Reji Philip from the UCF's NanoScience Technology Center, Panit Chantharasupawong from UCF's College of Optics and Photonics, and Huifeng Qian from Department of Chemistry at the Carnegie Mellon University.

Research students from the the University of Alabama measure wind speeds as Hurricane Isaac makes landfall, Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, in New Orleans, La. Isaac was packing 80 mph winds, making it a Category 1 hurricane. It came ashore early Tuesday near the mouth of the Mississippi River, driving a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland and soaking a neck of land that stretches into the Gulf. The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with the its erratic history. GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) ? Hurricane Isaac sidestepped New Orleans on Wednesday, sending the worst of its howling wind and heavy rain into a cluster of rural fishing villages that had few defenses against the slow-moving storm that could bring days of unending rain.

Isaac arrived exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city's fortified levee system easily handled the assault.

The city's biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding. Just one person was reported killed, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew just to be sure.

But in Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over an 18-mile levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall to relieve the strain.

"I'm getting text messages from all over asking for help," said Joshua Brockhaus, an electrician who was rescuing neighbors in his boat. "I'm dropping my dogs off, and I'm going back out there."

By midafternoon, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm. The Louisiana National Guard wrapped up rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, saying they felt confident they had gotten everyone out and there were no serious injuries but would stay in the area over the coming days to help, National Guard spokesman Capt. Lance Cagnolatti said.

Isaac's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 60 mph by Wednesday evening. Even at its strongest, Isaac was far weaker than Hurricane Katrina, which crippled New Orleans in 2005. Because Isaac's coiled bands of rain and wind were moving at only 6 mph ? about the pace of a brisk walk ? the threat of storm surges and flooding was expected to last into a second night as the immense comma-shaped system crawled across Louisiana.

"We didn't think it was going to be like that," Brockhaus said. "The storm stayed over the top of us. For Katrina, we got 8 inches of water. Now we have 13 feet."

In Plaquemines Parish, about two dozen people who defied evacuation orders needed to be rescued. The stranded included two police officers whose car became stuck.

"I think a lot of people were caught with their pants down," said Jerry Larpenter, sheriff in nearby Terrebonne Parish. "This storm was never predicted right since it entered the Gulf. It was supposed to go to Florida, Panama City, Biloxi, New Orleans. We hope it loses its punch once it comes in all the way."

The storm knocked out power to as many as 700,000 people, stripped branches off trees and flattened fields of sugar cane so completely that they looked as if a tank had driven over them.

Plaquemines Parish ordered a mandatory evacuation for the west bank of the Mississippi below Belle Chasse because of worries about a storm surge. The order affected about 3,000 people, including a nursing home with 112 residents. In Jefferson Parish, the sheriff ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

West of New Orleans in St. John the Baptist Parish, flooding from Isaac forced 1,500 people to evacuate. And Gov. Bobby Jindal's office said thousands in the area needed to evacuate. Rising water closed off all main thoroughfares into the parish, and in many areas, water lapped up against houses and left cars stranded.

After wind-driven water spilled over the levee in Plaquemines Parish, state officials said they would cut a hole in it as soon as weather allowed and equipment could be brought to the site.

In coastal Mississippi, officials used small motorboats Wednesday to rescue at least two dozen people from a neighborhood Isaac flooded in Pearlington. In addition, the National Weather Service said there were reports of at least three possible tornados touching down in coastal counties. No injuries were reported.

None of the reports had been confirmed because there was no way for survey teams to assess the area to determine whether damage was done by tornadoes or straight-line winds until the weather cleared, said NWS Meteorologist Shawn O'Neil.

Back in New Orleans, the storm canceled remembrance ceremonies for those killed by Katrina. Since that catastrophe, the city's levee system has been bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements. The bigger, stronger levees were tested for the first time by Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Rachel Rodi said the flood-control measures were working "as intended" during Isaac.

"We don't see any issues with the hurricane system at this point," she said.

Isaac came ashore late Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, with 80 mph winds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It drove a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland.

In Vermilion Parish, a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle ahead of the storm. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. But every system is different.

"It's totally up to the storm," said Ken Graham, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Slidell, La.

Slashing rain and wind gusts up to 100 mph buffeted New Orleans skyscrapers.

In the French Quarter near Bourbon Street, Jimmy Maiuri was shooting video from outside his second-floor apartment. Maiuri, who fled from Katrina at the last minute, stayed behind this time with no regrets. He was amazed at the storm's timing.

"It's definitely not one to take lightly, but it's not Katrina," he said. "No one is going to forget Aug. 29, forever. Not here at least."

As hard wind and heavy rain pelted Melba Leggett-Barnes' home in the Lower 9th Ward, an area leveled during Katrina, she felt more secure than she did seven years ago.

"I have a hurricane house this time," said Barnes, who has been living in her newly rebuilt home since 2008. She and her husband, Baxter Barnes, were among the first to get a home through Brad Pitt's Make It Right program.

Her yellow house with a large porch and iron trellis was taking a beating but holding strong.

"I don't have power, but I'm all right," said Barnes, a cafeteria worker for the New Orleans school system.

In Mississippi, some sections of the main highway that runs along the Gulf, U.S. 90, were closed by flooding.

In Pass Christian, a Mississippi coastal community wiped out by hurricanes Camille and Katrina, Mayor Chipper McDermott was optimistic that Isaac would not deal a heavy blow.

"It's not too bad, but the whole coast is going to be a mess," he said.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend. The storm was expected to weaken to a tropical depression Thursday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

More time needed to end Syria conflict, says Assad

President Bashar al-Assad vowed in comments broadcast Wednesday that his forces would win the conflict ravaging Syria but that more time was needed, as rebels targeted a northern military airport.

Assad's statements, in an interview with pro-regime Addounia channel, came a day after a car bomb rocked a funeral in a Damascus suburb killing 27 people, and as a watchdog reported 189 people killed countrywide on Tuesday.

"I can summarise in one phrase: we are progressing, the situation on the ground is better but we have not yet won -- this will take more time," Assad said in excerpts of the interview broadcast by the private channel.

Assad also scoffed at an idea being championed by Turkey of creating buffer zones within Syria to receive those displaced by the conflict.

"Talk of buffer zones firstly is not on the table and secondly it is an unrealistic idea by hostile countries and the enemies of Syria," he added.

French President Francois Hollande said on Monday France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of such buffer zones, which are aimed at preventing those displaced by the fighting flooding over the borders into neighbouring states.

His foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, admitted Wednesday that plans to create buffer zones in Syria were "very complicated" and would require the imposition of partial no-fly zones.

Assad also mocked those defecting from his regime, saying their departure amounted to a "self-cleansing of the government firstly and the country generally."

The Syrian leader paid tribute to government security forces, who have been fighting rebels nationwide, for their "heroic conduct."

"Despite several mistakes, there is a strong bond" between the regime and the Syrian people, Assad insisted, boasting the support of the majority of the country's population.

"Everyone is worried about their country, that is normal. But they (rebels) will not be able to spread fear, they never will," he said.

"I say to Syrians, destiny is in your hands, and not in the hands of others."

Addounia said it would screen the full interview at 1800 GMT on Wednesday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, meanwhile, said that fierce fighting broke out on Wednesday between the Syrian army and rebels near Taftanaz military airport, between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib.

Explosions could be heard from the airport, a base for fighter planes and helicopters running sorties over the rebel strongholds of Aleppo and Idlib, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

Taftanaz has been the target of several attacks by insurgents entrenched in these two cities, which have suffered daily shelling by government troops.

The battle for Aleppo, Syria's second largest city, has lasted for over a month, with the army unable to dislodge the rebels.

Regime forces meanwhile again shelled rebel strongholds in a belt of outer eastern suburbs of Damascus on Wednesday, according to the Local Coordination Committees, comprising activists on the ground.

The Observatory has reported fierce shelling for days of the neighbourhoods as the army pressed its drive to push rebel fighters out of the capital.

State-run newspaper Tishrin said Tuesday's car bombing of a funeral in Damascus was an indication that the "terrorist" groups have reached a very advanced stage of despair and bankruptcy."

The bombing hit Jaramana, a mainly Druze and Christian town on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus that the Observatory described as generally supportive of Assad's government.

"Jaramana will only serve as a new incentive to continue to root out terrorism and hold its supporters and perpetrators accountable," Tishrin said.

State media blamed rebel fighters for the bombing, but the opposition Syrian National Council accused Assad's regime of staging the bombing against its own supporters in a bid to divert attention from the killings of hundreds of people during an army assault on a largely Sunni Muslim suburb of the capital last week.

Some 80 percent of Syrians are Sunni Muslim, while around 10 percent belong to Assad's Alawite community, five percent are Christian, three percent Druze and one percent Ismaili.

The opposition draws much of its support from the Sunni majority, who have borne the brunt of the government's crackdown.

Activists say around 25,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's rule broke out in March last year, while the United Nations says more than 214,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries.

Underscoring the growing humanitarian crisis, it emerged that seven Syrians, two of them children, who attempted to flee the conflict by boat earlier this month, drowned off the coast of the nearby Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

The UN refugee agency said it was the "first case" of Syrian refugees trying to make the 100 kilometre (60 mile) sea passage.

"It is hard to know if this is a trend," UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told reporters in Geneva.

Money and happiness | Aspen Daily News Online

Money can?t buy happiness? can be heard in contemporary music, positive psychology, and on local pulpits. However, recent research indicates that income is positively correlated with happiness. Research on larger groups also indicates that income may contribute to a state of well being at a national level. For example, in comparing the average life satisfaction of citizens across nations, wealth as indicated by gross national product (GNP), is a strong predictor of happiness. Thus, generally, the greater a nation?s GNP the more likely a nation?s citizens will report greater life satisfaction (i.e. happiness). This research makes sense in that financial stability improves satisfaction in life by providing more time with friends and family, freedom to pursue interests, and decreased financial worry.
?
Despite this interesting data, one must take the relationship with money and happiness with a grain of salt. In reality, the relationship with money and happiness is not clearly delineated. The impact of money on happiness is greatest for those with the least resources; as income increases, the contribution of money to happiness decreases. Eventually, the relationship between money and happiness is negligible as incomes rise. Thus, money may not be the most important with regard to maintaining long term happiness or mental well-being.
?
Additionally, extant research also suggests that one?s relationship with money can become problematic in that people with higher levels of materialism tend to be less happy than those who focus their energy around relational, mental, and spiritual fulfillment. Research also indicates that too much saving can decrease perceived quality of life. The key to happiness is to save enough for security and spend some money on activities and experiences that enhance well-being.
?
When we focus on money, we can become too focused on working harder and harder to earn income, which often leads to increased anxiety and decreased sense of satisfaction. Rather than focusing on money, a better key to well-being is to focus on increasing happiness contributors in one?s life. In fact, money plays a minimal role in happiness in comparison to factors such as: having a focus on meaningful goals, expressing gratitude, giving of one?s strengths, and simplifying one?s life to concentrate on those people and activities most meaningful to personal well-being.
?
Most importantly, our expectations for life, relationships, and financial well-being significantly impact wellness. The greater a person?s expectations, the more likely a person is to experience stress, anxiety, and depression. True wealth isn?t about money. True wealth comes from quality relationships, good health, a focus on others in addition to oneself, and continued self-improvement and growth. By focusing on aspects of life beyond money, true wealth and happiness can be realized.

Omega 3Fish Oil And Heart Health: Improve Your Heart Health By ...

Inflammation and heart health have an undeniable connection. While inflammation itself does not cause cardiovascular disease, it is certainly a proven factor in contributing to its damaging effects. The more inflamed the arteries and veins become, the more susceptible they are to clotting, which can lead to everything from high blood pressure to heart attack and stroke.

In a properly functioning cardiovascular system, the blood flows smoothly, helping to contribute to oxygen flow and dispersing necessary nutrients to the rest of the body. As heart function is hampered, those vital processes are constrained and the result can be serious health issues. In fact, heart disease is one of the most common of all diseases and heart attack remains one of the most common causes of death among adults.

So what does all this mean when it comes to inflammation and the heart? Simply put, the more you can do to reduce inflammation the better off your heart will be. Avoiding smoking and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels are all important factors in combating heart disease and so too is reducing inflammation in the arteries and veins. Aside from taking prescription anti-inflammatories one of the best ways to achieve this is with fish oil.

The Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil are some of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories on the planet. That's why doctors have been recommending for years that patients get a regular amount of fish oil in their daily diet. For those who don't like seafood or don't have access to it, this can be difficult to accomplish. In these cases, a fish oil supplement may be the answer.

Rather than trying to get as many Omega 3's as you can from your tuna fish sandwich, why not just take two tiny capsules of an all-natural fish oil supplement and get everything you need? When it comes to inflammation and the heart, you can't be too careful, so it makes sense to go directly to the richest source there is and supplement manufacturers are now making that easier than ever.

By harvesting fresh, pollutant-free fish in the pristine waters off New Zealand, they start you off with an ideal source. Then they put it through a careful manufacturing process that helps to retain all of the natural goodness of fish oil so that you end up with an Omega 3 supplement that you can trust.

Taken as part of an overall routine that includes a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, this is the best way we know to address inflammation and the heart and keep it from becoming a danger. A daily fish oil supplement can provide your heart with everything it needs to function properly and keep the rest of your body in good health too.

You can't afford to take chances when it comes to your cardiovascular health, so why not take the best nature has to offer. It's the proven path to good heart health and it can have you feeling better and living longer, so tap into the healing power of fish oil today!

James Brown is passionate about health and fitness. I am sure you are concerned about your health; therefore, suggest you consider adding omega 3 fish oil to your daily diet. You may download a free fish oil buyer's guide and obtain additional information on omega 3 and heart health by going to:=>Benefits Of Omega 3 Fish Oil.

Health & Fitness

Most people are not aware that there is a diet plan in existence which can extend their lives exponentially simply through whole foods and natural products. It is known as the Mediterranean diet, and if you have never heard about it before this is the world?s premier diet for decreasing cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer and others illnesses that most commonly cause deaths around the world.

The Mediterranean diet is called such because of the eponymous sea located in the heart of Europe between the European and African sections. Any countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea have what is known as a Mediterranean diet plan, and regardless if you are talking about countries in Northern Africa or along the eastern edge or along the northern section of the sea such as Italy or Greece, these are all countries which follow the Mediterranean diet.

The Mediterranean Diet involves the consumption of mostly vegetables, beans, fruits, and grains. It also involves the consumption of meat, but only fish or white meat and only a few times per week, plus a lot of olive oil. They also consume whole foods and natural dairy products like Yogurt. Yogurt has cultures that are also part of the health and wellness of the individuals of the Mediterranean region. Another is garlic. Garlic is well known for preventing blood clots, cholesterol-reducing levels, and provides protection against most cancers.

And while doctors in the United States would have you believe that any type of alcohol consumption is bad for you because of the carbs or the sugars, the reality is that wine is rich in antioxidants and other healthy elements. Part of the Mediterranean diet is regular consumption of wine; two glasses per night per min and one glass per evening for women. Wine is a vital element to avoiding the Western diets that have caused Americans to have a 72% obesity rate.

If you have ever done any studies on cancer you know that cancer cells thrive in acidic environments, and the typical American diet causes a high level of acidity due to the large amounts of saturated fat. This is why the Mediterranean diet is so superior because there is virtually no saturated fat in the diet plan, but only natural fats related to whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans, olive oil and natural dairy products along with fish. If you are looking to reach old age while still in your prime, you have to think about what you are putting into your body.

If it?s your first time researching The Mediterranean Diet, take your time. There are many secrets behind the power of this unique diet plan, not the least of which is the secret weapon of The Mediterranean Diet: your body.

Christchurch Life Coach and Earthquakes Survivor and Tells How to Overcome Adversity for Personal Success

WEBWIRE ? Friday, August 24, 2012

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand August, 2012 ? Karen Scott - the New Zealand entrepreneur, author, professional motivation speaker and life coach ? has survived several financial, emotional and literally earth shattering disasters in her time, including the Christchurch earthquake which destroyed her business and left her with serious physical injuries. Despite being knocked down several times, Karen has risen from the rubble and founded Kickstart?Life Coaching New Zealand to share her story and her wisdom on how to remain motivated in the face of adversity. www.kickstartlifecoach.co.nz/

One of the most devastating and potentially crippling experiences Karen has endured was the earthquake in Christchurch where she saw her caf? and bar crumble around and on top of her. ?The Christchurch earthquake was for me, and for so many others, a terrifying experience which had significant ramifications on my professional, financial and personal life. I am still wracked with fear when I remember being trapped under the rubble, and of course the physical effects lasted a while, but the emotional stuff can haunt you longer if you?re not careful,? says Karen. www.kickstartlifecoach.co.nz/

But even a collapsed building couldn?t hold Karen down. In fact, Karen?s optimism, resilience and coping strategies meant she saw the rubble from the earthquake as a way to start over and stay motivated ? she was determined to earn back what she?d lost.

?I have opened a new caf? and home baking business in New Zealand despite the continued aftershocks because this is home. I have also recently restarted my Christchurch life coaching business, which had temporarily been on hold because of the earthquakes but I thought this is when more people than ever need a hand to overcome adversity, get back on track and take charge of their lives again,? says Karen Scott. www.kickstartlifecoach.co.nz/

?Karen is an amazing lady,? says Mike Catton from NLP Christchurch. ?Her strength of character in overcoming adversity in her life is an inspiration to us all. Throughout her challenges she has kept a positive spirit and had enough resourcefulness to still look out for others and care for them too.? www.kickstartlifecoach.co.nz/

Kickstart Life Coaching helps people evaluate their status, goals, and priorities and gives them a clearer picture of what they want to do in life. Karen Scott believes that procrastination and frustration are key factors that leave people stagnant and unable to move on from tragic experiences or even smaller everyday life problems.

Using over 20 years of entrepreneurial experience and having herself risen from the rubble, Karen supports New Zealanders to get their lives back on track and helps them achieve the goals they want to accomplish in life.

Surgeon rides kid?s bike through traffic in race to hospital (VIDEO)

Dr. Catherine Baucom rides to the rescue. (BRASS Surgery Center)Dr. Catherine Baucom was stuck in traffic while making her way to the BRASS Surgery Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Wednesday. So the determined doctor left her car behind and cut through the traffic jam on a 7-year-old's pink bicycle.

"Catherine called, she was outside my house.? She said 'Hey do you have a bike?'" colleague Dr. Brian Barnett told WAFB. "I walked outside and said yeah, it's a kids bike. I got the air pump out and aired the tires up as much as I could."

The nearly 6-foot-tall surgeon then donned the girl's helmet and peddled away.

"It was hot pink and small," Dr. Baucom said, "The helmet was pink with princesses."

Dr. Baucom then cut through traffic on Baton Rouge Interstate 10 before being stopped by police. When she explained the unusual circumstances surrounding her mode of travel, police immediately escorted her through traffic and to the operating room.

"They said we can escort you and he essentially drove past me and then he turned around and was videotaping me," Dr. Baucom said.? "I did tell him I didn't know if he could keep up with me."

Dr. Baucom herself is an avid cyclist. And as a small reward for her dedication, Dr. Barnett's daughter said she could keep the princess-themed helmet. However, the bike itself has been returned.

A message from the author,
Mike Teitelbaum, MD and
World Famous Mentalist

Dear Friends,

My name is Dr. Mike Teitelbaum and I am a family physician in Los Angeles, California. Besides practicing medicine, I travel extensively lecturing on hypnosis and memory improvement at leading colleges and Fortune 500 companies.

I am also an active member of The American Guild of Variety Artists and The Screen Actors Guild. My hypnosis and mentalist shows are known around the world and are always in popular demand.

As you may already know, a mentalist impresses his audience by doing incredible feats of memory instantaneously. You may not need to be able to remember a thousand random numbers? or remember every birthday in an audience of hundreds. However, you are probably interested in how to remember names and faces, dates and appointments, and phone numbers. You may want to increase your memory power to get higher scores on exams.

I've spent years perfecting the techniques in this book to use in my shows. You'll see the difference a few hours of coaching and practice will make to your memory. It's easy and it's fun. Plus, this book is filled with humor and funny quotes that will make reading it very enjoyable. What better way to learn how to improve your memory?

This book is for people who have difficulty memorizing.? It teaches the systems that allow for better memory.? These systems definitely helped me get through law school and medical school.

I recommend this book and software package to everyone who wants to improve their memory.

Sincerely,

Mike Teitelbaum

Dr. Amazing makes it EASY . . . a MUST READ.
I have read many of the books on improving memory, such as those by Kevin Trudeau and Harry Lorayne. This new book by Dr. Amazing far outclasses them. Amazing has made some old memory systems much better and easier to use. He also has devised some new memory systems. I used his numerical order alphabet and taught my seven-year old son, Nicholas, the first 20 picture words in two days! I plan to teach him the entire book.
This book's a winner.

Perfect for seniors who want to
combat "Old Age" memory loss!

Elvis lives. Big Foot roams the forest. Aliens have landed. Yes, modern myths abound. But few are as pervasive or damaging as the misconceptions about aging and memory. Just take a gander at these tall tales.

  • You lose 10,000 brain cells a day, and one day you just run out.

  • Your memory gets worse as you get older, and you can?t do anything about it.

  • Forgetfulness is a sign that something is wrong with your brain.

Not one of these statements is true, yet thousands of people over 60 continue to believe them. If you have mild memory loss, it doesn?t necessarily mean something is wrong with your brain. Here?s a look at few simple ways to sharpen your recall.

Doctors agree . . .

Dear Reader,

Regular mental exercise like memorizing names, shopping lists, and other important information is vital if you want to keep your memory sharp as you age.

People in their sixties, seventies, and eighties tend not to practice using their memories as much as they did when they were younger. Many people in this age group, for instance, rely on lists, and that?s a fine technique if it isn?t overused. But if you become overly dependent on lists, that can actually diminish your ability to concentrate and recall.

Alan S. Brown, Ph.D.

Author of How to Increase Your Memory Power and professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

?

Dear Reader,

Just because a person cannot recall a word seen only a minute ago does not mean that the word is not in memory. For someone to know something it is of course necessary to have that knowledge in memory, but that presence in memory alone is not enough. Something else is needed, something that makes the stored knowledge accessible.
