New home sales climb 5.7 percent in September
The US Census Bureau's monthly New Residential Home Sales Report for September showed sales climbing 5.7 percent since August.
This graph shows new single family home sales since 2004. Last month, sales rose 27.1 percent above the level seen a year ago.

Egypt to probe protest clashes, senior Brotherhood members
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's public prosecutor has ordered an investigation into violence that broke out last Friday between Islamist and liberal demonstrators, including accusations against top-ranking officials in the Muslim Brotherhood, the state news agency said.
Opponents and supporters of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi threw stones, bottles and petrol bombs, and some fought hand-to-hand on Friday, a sign of tensions between rival groups trying to shape the new Egypt after the fall of Hosni Mubarak.
Liberals and leftists accused members of the Muslim Brotherhood of attacking them in an attempt to crush protests against Mursi, whose opponents say has failed to deliver on promises for his first 100 days kin office .
The Brotherhood has denied the accusations.
Many of the thousands who gathered in Tahrir Square on Friday were also angry at a court ruling that acquitted former officials charged with ordering a camel-and-horseback attack on protesters in the uprising that ousted Mubarak last year.
Public Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud ordered the intelligence services and the Interior Ministry to investigate those behind Friday's violence which injured at least 147 people, state news agency MENA said.
The public prosecution received 53 official complaints accusing various political figures including senior Muslim Brotherhood members Essam el-Erian and Mohamed Beltagy, as well as Islamist cleric Safwat Hegazi, of ordering their supporters to use violence against peaceful protesters, MENA said.
Erian and Beltagy could not be reached for comment but Brotherhood lawyer Abdel-Moneim Abdel Maksoud told Reuters the accusations were "malicious and lack evidence" and that Brotherhood members who were injured on Friday would also file a complaint to the Public Prosecutor against civil forces.
Initial investigations showed that birdshot had been used in the clashes, MENA said, adding that protesters had also been subjected to verbal insults, sexual assaults, and theft.
Three people suspected of setting fire to vehicles during the clashes have been detained, MENA said.
Tensions have risen between the judiciary and Mursi after he tried to remove Mahmoud from his post last week, seen as a response to the acquittal of those who were standing trial on charges of ordering the horse-and-camel charge last year. Mursi had sought to appoint Mahmoud as ambassador to the Vatican.
The move triggered an outcry from judges who said Mursi had exceeded his powers and attacked the independence of the judiciary.
The Supreme Judicial Council presented Mursi with a petition on Saturday demanding Mahmoud stay in his job. The presidency in turn said Mursi would halt moves to make him an ambassador.

Police question 2 at Pakistani girl's hospital
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) ? British police have questioned two people who tried to visit a hospitalized Pakistani teenager shot for promoting girls' education, raising fears about her safety following pledges by the Taliban to make another attempt on her life.
Fourteen-year-old Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head by the Taliban last week as she was returning home from school in Pakistan. She was airlifted Monday to Britain to receive specialized medical care and protection from follow-up attacks threatened by the militants.
Medical Director Dr. Dave Rosser of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham stressed Tuesday that security was "under control" at the hospital after the overnight incident. He said several people had turned up at the hospital claiming to be the girl's relatives but didn't get very far.
He said the people were arrested, but police said they had only been questioned.
"We don't believe there's any threat to her personal security," Rosser told journalists, explaining the hospital did not believe the suspects were related to Malala. "We think it's probably people being over-curious."
Police would not immediately confirm the details of the incident.
Malala was targeted by the Taliban for promoting girls' education and criticizing the militant group's behavior when they took over the scenic Swat Valley where she lived. Two of her classmates were also wounded in the attack and are receiving treatment in Pakistan.
The attack on the girls horrified people in Pakistan and across the world. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Malala had become "a symbol of all that is good in us."
"The work she did is far higher before God than that which is being done by terrorists in the name of religion," he said at the Economic Cooperation Organization Summit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. "We will continue her bright work."
Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik has announced a $1 million bounty for Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan, saying he was the one who announced that the Taliban carried out the attack on Malala.
The Taliban has threatened to target Malala until she is killed because she promotes "Western thinking."
Rosser said Malala is proving to be strong so far, but did not elaborate about her recovery.
Doctors are optimistic that Malala's age is in her favor. Unlike adults, the brains of teenagers are still growing and better able to adapt to trauma.
Teens also are generally healthier and their bodies have a stronger ability to react to the disruption that the injury causes, said Dr. Jonathan Fellus, chief scientific officer at the New Jersey-based International Brain Research Foundation.
"It helps to be young and resilient to weather that storm," he said. "Because her brain is continuing to develop at that age, she may have more flexibility in the brain."
There's also a psychological aspect to why youngsters have a better shot at recovery. While injured adults often mourn the loss of what they had, teens don't know what they are missing.
"They have an amazing capacity for hope," Fellus said. In Malala's case, her strong personality would also help her recover, he added.
Still, doctors cautioned that it is impossible to say how Malala will do without knowing the path of the bullet and what damages it caused, details that have not been released.
"The brain is like real estate," said Dr. Anders Cohen, chief of neurosurgery at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York. "Location is everything.
"Based on the information we have, it appears that Malala was shot from the front down diagonally, but we don't know what part of the brain the bullet went through, whether it crossed the midline and hit any vessels, or whether the bullet passed through the right or left side of the brain."
But both physicians say it is extremely unlikely that a full recovery can be made. They could only hope that the bullet took a "lucky path" ? going through a more "silent," or less active ? part of the brain.
"You don't have a bullet go through your brain and have a full recovery," Fellus said.

our life in a click: {Entertaining} Avengers Party
An Avengers theme isn't the first thing that came to mind while planning my daughter's 13th birthday family party but that's what she wanted.
She ?cooked up the idea worked it out with a few of her cousins at an earlier party.?
They all ?had become superfans over the summer after Grandma took a bunch of them to see it.
I used red, white and two blues as our super hero color scheme. I wanted to try this idea that I had seen on Pinterest (where else?) to combine balloons and streamers. ?It made a nice photo back drop and was very easy to do.You sew the balloons together by their tales. ?I used wax twine and a big embroidery needle.
The streamers went up with masking tape and the balloon swag with Command hooks.
It was pretty easy to find Avengers party goods which was nice.

I got a nice bouquet of white flowers at Costco for the dining room.

The mashed potato bar was a big hit and my eggplant rollatini was also very popular.

What Is Doodling? Inspired By A Spiral Staircase
Imagine what a doodle drawing based on the image linked to this article would look like. What is doodling? It could be a drawing based on this spiral idea.
Would you like to have a go at doing a doodle drawing based on this photo of a spiral staircase? If so that'd be great. If you don't have the time or inclination right now I completely understand, but please read on and the principles here may help you for another drawing or sculpting project at a later date.
A Useful Mindset
You don't have to think in terms of producing a copy of this image. Simply view the image for a while, take it in and take the time to appreciate it. Describe to yourself what it is you like about it, color, lines, shapes and forms, dark and light. Notice the cracks and crevices. Note the textures and describe them to yourself. See the depth, height, volume and space. Take your time.
Now think how you could reinterpret what you've been viewing and experiencing. The easiest and most obvious thing to do is to get into a quiet environment with pen, pencil and paper and start making marks.
If you felt more adventurous you could make a space where you could use materials such as wire, string, sticks and so on and start building or "drawing" with these materials in the open space you've set aside. Cool idea hey! And there's a whole lot more you could do with this process... That's for later.
OK, so maybe you don't have time or space for that right now so lets think back to drawing with pen, pencil, markers, crayons, pastels, charcoal, color pencils... and paper, cardboard, canvas, board, fabric.
Just let yourself express while thinking about what you liked about this image.
There is an important thing to keep at the forefront of your mind.
As I mentioned earlier, your not trying to replicate this image, unless that's what you'd really like to do, but I don't recommend replicating or copying for the purpose of what we're doing here. Rather, the image is triggering in you a response and you are the author now. You've done your viewing of the image, now it's time to move away from it and start drawing. How it comes out is up to you completely and how it comes out will be a unique expression that has it's own unique value. Even what you may think are mistakes are not really mistakes, they are part of the process of you expressing from your unique view of life and the world around you.
There are no mistakes, simply the revealing of a process you went through to produce a reinterpretation of something you were inspired by, in this case an image of an architectural design and construction using the spiral. Your final image may reveal your personal struggle to express your thoughts and feelings. That's part of what makes it unique and valuable.
Try to resist the urge to use a rubber unless the rubber is for the purpose of enhancing the effects of the image. And...please, at any stage of the drawing, resist that awful urge to think "this is no good" and screw it up or throw it away in the bin. It can be fun to screw up pieces of paper and see if you can throw them into the bin in one go but this isn't the time for throwing practice:) Do some throwing of screwed up pieces of news paper later or do that now to get it out of your system. It's actually really fun! You can do fun creative things with the pieces of screwed up paper as well. Another cool what is doodling conceptual project for later:)
The Finished Drawing, Signing & Notes
Once you get to the point when you feel that the drawing is finished set it aside somewhere safe. Once again, resist the urge that may come up in you to think that it's "dumb" or "a stupid drawing". It's not, and I can tell you that with confidence even though I haven't even seen what you've drawn. Why? Because you took the time to examine an image, even if only for a minute or two, and then you made the effort to react to it, to express yourself. That is important and valuable.
Make sure to sign your work and perhaps make a note on the back about the source of your inspiration. You could put brief information about the internet address of the Pinterest board and the Pinner of that pin. In this case the board is called Stairs, Doors, Windows and Paths and the Pinner is Desleigh~downunder~ Australia .... This person has put together awesome boards and pins.
If you were to take your drawing to a framer and have it framed in an appropriate frame that would enhance your image you would be amazed at how good it will look. If you have the money to do that then do it. If not consider doing it yourself as a gift to yourself and a fun project, maybe involving a friend or family member as well.
The Value of Your Work
In time that image will grow in value both for you as the author and one being reminded of your personal journey in life and what is and was important to you. And... in terms of money value, your work will increase over time.
Imagine if someone found your doodle drawing in a collection of family stuff a few decades from now. How valuable do you think your drawing would be to them? Especially if that person was your grandchild or great grandchild. Imagine too if a finder of your drawing a few decades from now was interested in checking out the internet address where the original image was that so inspired you to make this unique work. How wonderful that would be. That finder person would gain an instant window into times past. We could go on and on about this...
What is doodle drawing? A whole lot more than we think!

There are many rumors about the next Google Nexus smartphone right now. It might be made by LG. It might launch on Oct. 29.?There might be more than one. It might have a built-in coffee maker.?
Alright, that last part's not true, but you get the idea.
Now, Google and LG employees have added fuel to the flames by accidentally?? "or perhaps intentionally," scream some conspiracy theorists?? posted photos which include the rumored device's name in the EXIF data.
As the Verge's Sam Byford points out, photos posted to Google+?from LG's Pyeongtaek Learning Center and a Google employee in Texas reference a device called the "Nexus 4." At this point, the photos have been yanked off the Internet, but the damage is done.
The name would make sense, if the next Nexus turns out to be a 4-inch device. (After all, the search engine giant did dub its 7-inch tablet the "Nexus 7.")
Either way, we'll find out if this name turns out to be correct, presumably, at the end of this month,?almost exactly a year from the moment Samsung and Google announced the current Google Nexus.

Two anti-drugs police killed in Peru jungle ambush
LIMA (Reuters) - Two police officers were killed and another two injured in an ambush in Peru's southeastern jungle region late on Friday, the latest strike again President Ollanta Humala's drive to regain control of cocaine-trafficking strongholds.
The head of Peru's police force said on Saturday that an anti-drug squad was attacked on its way to the district of Kepashiato in the dense group of jungle valleys known as the VRAEM, the most productive growing area in the world's top coca producer.
"Yesterday, a group of five intelligence unit officers boarded a truck to go to Kepashiato. They were ambushed near kilometer 51 on the highway, presumably by drug traffickers," police chief Raul Salazar told local radio.
Prime Minister Juan Jimenez said: "I'm sure we will continue lamenting (incidents like these). It's inevitable in a war like the one we have in the VRAEM." Rebels often catch soldiers in ambushes when they venture outside their fortified bases.
Counterinsurgency experts have criticized the government's security strategy as too predictable and Humala has had several defense ministers since taking office last year.
Remnant groups of the 30-year-old Shining Path insurgency remain active and smuggle drugs in lawless jungles areas. It was not immediately clear if Friday's attack was led by the Shining Path rebels or someone else.
Last weekend, the Shining Path destroyed three helicopters on the ground belonging to the company that runs Peru's only natural gas pipeline.
In April, they captured 36 natural gas workers in their first large-scale kidnapping since 2003 and said later it was a ruse to lure soldiers into ambushes.
Shining Path's founders were captured in the early 1990s, when Humala fought against them as an army officer in a conflict that killed 70,000 people.
Taking control of the remote valleys in southeastern Peru is crucial for Humala's economic plans. Construction will soon begin on a $3 billion natural gas pipeline that will originate in the area and feed a new petrochemical complex on the Pacific coast.

South Africa labour turmoil hitting growth
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Two months of crippling labour turmoil are likely to force South Africa to look again at its economic growth forecasts, the central bank's deputy governor said on Sunday.
Wildcat strikes that started in the platinum mines have left more than 50 dead and spilled to other industries, undermining investor confidence in Africa's biggest economy and tarnishing President Jacob Zuma's government.
Violent clashes between police and protesters continued over the weekend and more than 70 miners were arrested.
"Growth forecasts will most likely need to be revisited," Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Daniel Mminele said in a speech to a JP Morgan investor seminar in Tokyo that was posted on the central bank's website.
The Reserve Bank's latest economic growth forecasts were for an average 2.6 percent this year and 3.4 percent next - still far short of the rate South Africa reckons it needs to cut unemployment accounting for a quarter of the labour force.
It was not immediately clear whether those growth forecasts, given in September, were the ones Mminele was referring to.
In another knock for South Africa, Standard and Poor's cut its credit rating on Friday, citing the strikes and social tensions. Moody's downgraded South Africa in September.
Reacting to the downgrades, Mminele said they were disappointing, but some of the criticism was valid.
IMPACT OF WAGES
Financial analysts are not only worried by the turmoil, but also by the possible impact on inflation of wage rises that some of the strikers have won - up to 22 percent in the case of Lonmin Plc miners.
The central bank had yet to see evidence that hefty wage increases were becoming the norm, but would have to keep a close eye on them in case they had a spillover in pushing up prices or expectations of price rises, Mminele said.
Clashes continued over the weekend, nearly two months after police shot dead 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine on August16, the bloodiest security incident in South Africa's post-apartheid history.
Police broke up a sit-in by nearly 600 miners from a Gold Fields mine demanding the release of colleagues at a police station, about 45 km (30 miles) west of Johannesburg. Seventy-two miners were arrested.
Near Rustenburg, in the "platinum belt" about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets after a march on an Anglo American Platinum mine turned violent. Four protesters were arrested.
President Zuma's government has been criticised for allowing the strikes to spread, as well as failure to address yawning class divisions and grinding poverty that still characterise South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid.
Zuma faces a significant threat from members of the ruling African national Congress who are lobbying for his removal as head of the party at a scheduled leadership election in December. He held a "social dialogue meeting" on Friday with union and business leaders and some cabinet ministers to discuss the economy.
But the meeting appeared to deliver little new: Zuma's office released a statement pushing the need for improved industrial relations and condemning the violent strikes.
Separately, Mines Minister Susan Shabangu was quoted by local media on the need for the ANC to drop talk of nationalisation. Some members of the party have lobbied for increased state intervention in the industry.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and drugs that selectively target a protein known as COX-2 prevent the development of intestinal polyps, the precursors of colorectal cancer. However, these drugs have severe side effects that preclude their routine use in the prevention of colorectal cancer. But now, a team of researchers, at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, has found that inhibiting an enzyme known as 11-beta-HSD2 (both genetically and using an extract from licorice) blocks COX-2 activity in human and mouse colorectal tumor cells, inhibiting their growth and metastasis in experimental models of colorectal cancer. Importantly, long-term inhibition of 11-beta-HSD2 did not have side effects on the heart and blood vessels of mice, as long-term treatment with selective COX-2 inhibitors does. The authors therefore suggest that inhibiting 11-beta-HSD2 might provide a new approach to preventing colorectal cancer.
In an accompanying commentary, Paul Stewart and Stephen Prescott, highlight the importance of these data for the development of a potential new therapeutic option in colorectal cancer.

In the bacterial world of your mouth, nurture wins out over nature

The human mouth is home to a teeming community of microbes, yet still relatively little is known about what determines the specific types of microorganisms that live there. Is it your genes that decide who lives in the microbial village, or is it your environment? In a study published online in Genome Research (www.genome.org), researchers have shown that environment plays a much larger role in determining oral microbiota than expected, a finding that sheds new light on a major factor in oral health.
Our oral microbiome begins to take shape as soon as we are born and sees a myriad of bacteria introduced to our mouth during childhood and later in life, yet little is known about whether nature (your genes) or nurture (your environment) has a stronger influence. Because of variations in the oral microbiome in both health and diseases like bacteremia and endocarditis, understanding the determinants of oral microbiota communities might lead to better prevention and treatment strategies.
In this study, a team of researchers from the University of Colorado sequenced the microbial DNA present in the saliva samples of a cohort of twins, and matched the DNA sequences in a database to determine which types of bacteria were present in each individual. In their data set, they utilized samples that were gathered over a decade of adolescence from the same individuals to observe how the salivary microbiome changes with time.
By comparing the salivary microbiomes of identical twins, who share the same genetic make-up and live in a common environment, the group found that their salivary microbiomes were not significantly more similar than the salivary microbiota of fraternal twins, who share only half of their genes, suggesting genetic relatedness is not as important as environment. "The conclusion that genetic relatedness plays at most only a small role in microbial relatedness was really a surprise," said Dr. Ken Krauter, senior author of the study.
"We were also intrigued to see that the microbiota of twin pairs becomes less similar once they moved apart from each other," added Simone Stahringer, first author of the study, explaining further evidence for the influence of environment on oral microbiota. Interestingly, in the samples obtained from the same individuals over time, they found that the salivary microbiome changed the most during early adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 17. This suggests that factors such as puberty or prominent behavioral changes at this age might be important.
Krauter explained that their work uncovered another unexpected finding, that there is a core community of bacteria that are present in nearly all humans studied. "Though there are definitely differences among different people, there is a relatively high degree of sharing similar microbial species in all human mouths."
The authors suggested that this report has established a framework for future studies of the factors that influence oral microbial communities. "With broad knowledge of the organisms to expect to find in mouths," said Krauter, "we can now better understand how oral hygiene, environmental exposure to substances like alcohol, methamphetamines and even foods we eat affect the balance of microbes."

Shuttle Endeavour makes trip through streets of Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour was greeted with a festival-like atmosphere in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood on Saturday, where it has paused from its snail-like crawl through narrow city streets towards its new home at a local museum.
Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday to begin a two-day, 12-mile (19-km) journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.
The shuttle, which flew from 1992 to 2011, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in Southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying 25 missions.
Thousands of area residents, many of whom walked a mile or more to get to where the shuttle was parked outside an arena on Saturday morning, celebrated the icon's visit to their neighborhood with food trucks and music.
Two brothers from the area, German and Joseph Raudales, watched the shuttle with smiles on their faces.
"I'm excited, I want to be an astronaut when I grow up," said 10-year-old Joseph Raudales.
The shuttle is 122 feet long and 78 feet wide and stands 5 stories tall at the tail - which police said makes it the largest object ever to move through Los Angeles. Its combined weight with the transporter is 80 tons.
Organizers say only a few inches separate Endeavour's wings from structures along the route, and workers have felled 400 trees along curbs to clear a path. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their loss.
Some street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters also have been temporarily removed.
OTHER SHUTTLES FIND HOMES
The project to move Endeavour will cost over $10 million, said Shell Amega, a spokeswoman for the science center. Charitable foundations and corporations have donated money and services for the move.
The center beat out a number of other institutions when the U.S. space agency NASA chose it last year as the permanent home for Endeavour, which was taken out of service because of the end of the shuttle program.
Endeavour has hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It had been parked at the airport in Los Angeles since arriving on September 21 after a ceremonial piggyback flight around California.
Endeavour was built to replace Challenger, using spare parts from two prior shuttles, according to Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the science center. Challenger was lost in a 1986 accident that killed seven astronauts.
The shuttle will be displayed in a temporary hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017, a 200-foot-tall (61-meter) structure will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, Phillips said.
The other remaining shuttles also have found homes.
The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitors complex next month.
